Total, the French energy conglomerate, has agreed to buy a majority stake in SunPower Corporation, the second largest US Solar Energy Company. Total acquired a 60% stake in SunPower for $1.38 billion, valuing the solar energy firm at around $2.3 billion. Total has acquired 59.35 million of SunPower’s outstanding Class A and B common shares at $23.25 per share, a 46% and 49% premium, respective to its closing price as of April 27, 2011. Total has also offered $1 billion of credit support to SunPower over the next five years. Total has been investing in renewable energy companies and research projects.
