Eastern Europe Can Leverage On Its Shale Gas Potential To Reduce Dependence On Russian Gas
Summary
Eastern Europe has long been dependent on Russia to meet its natural gas requirements. East European countries have long-term natural gas supply contracts with Russia, which are linked to oil prices. Since mid-2009, a trend of reducing levels of linkages between the prices of crude oil and gas has been observed, globally. During this time, crude oil prices saw an upward trend, while the gas prices saw a decline – primarily driven by declining US gas imports. Amidst these, European gas importing countries have realized that it is more economical for them to buy gas from the spot market than to import it from Russia under the existing long-term contracts. Further, huge shale gas resources in Eastern Europe have the potential to provide adequate natural gas to these countries to meet their increasing domestic demands. Following the success of shale gas development in the US, gas shales in Eastern Europe, if developed successfully, have the potential to help this region to reduce its dependence on Russian gas imports.
