South Korea had a total installed capacity of 73,881 MW and installed nuclear capacity of 18,101 MW in 2010. Currently the country is operating 21 nuclear power reactors. The current operating commercial nuclear reactors in the country are of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) types. Nuclear energy plays a major role in the country’s energy mix. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co, Ltd (KHNP) is the key player in South Korea’s nuclear power industry. There are around five nuclear power reactors under construction and six more nuclear power reactors are under planning phase, of which two nuclear power reactors are reasonably firmly planned. The nuclear reactors under construction and planning phase are of OPR-1000 and APR-1400 types.
