The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) reported that there are 200 million outdoor power devices being used by consumers including mowers, garden tractors, utility vehicles, trimmers, edgers, chain saws, snow throwers, tillers, and blowers. The outdoor power equipment sector had a global average growth rate of 2.5% from 2005 to 2009, with growth peaking at 3.1% in 2007. After estimated 1.5% growth in 2010, the percentage growth is expected to rise each year from 2011 to 2013. In-ground irrigation systems, zero-turn mowers, tillers, chainsaws and robotic mowers are projected to be the most-demanded outdoor tools in the United States in the near future.

Leading outdoor power equipment OEMs have increased the use of lithium-ion batteries to produce cord-free products, however, opportunities still exist for additional convenience. Current opportunities and trends include alternative fuels, automated yard work, convenient yard work, and year-round outdoor living. Husqvarna, one of the global leaders in outdoor power equipment, is one of the bigger players in the robotic lawn mower segment. This advanced technology use guide wires, installed under the grass, to limit the mower from wandering outside of the designated cutting area. The Automower Solar Hybrid, manufactured by Husqvarna, is the first fully automatic lawn mower that integrates the use of solar power. A solar panel built into the top of the unit enables it to absorb power while cutting grass, extending the cutting time.

Kyodo America Industries, maker of LawnBott brand robotic mowers, launched the first robotic mower that does not need a perimeter guide wire. The LB1200 Spyder has sensors that identify when it moves onto non-grass surfaces, causing the unit to reverse.
