Managing Meter Data for a Smarter Grid
Aberdeen Group, March 2011, Pages: 14
Electric, water, and gas grids around the world are growing smarter. New regulations and rising costs are driving utilities to replace meters once read by hand with devices that transmit data directly to utility systems.
Utilities have never managed this much data before. Software tools can capture, validate, and integrate meter data with utility systems, but how can utilities use this data to create business value? Aberdeen research shows that companies with a Meter Data Management System (MDMS) make meter data available to decision-makers within a day, while those without an MDMS require up to a month to accomplish this task. When meter data is available more swiftly, utilities can use it to improve operations and customer service, and to manage outages. Beyond adopting MDMS technology, many utilities are regularly reviewing their data management practices, developing meter data structures that contribute to their business goals, and building data management skills within their organization. However, many utilities that have already taken the first steps toward managing smart meter data have not yet dedicated personnel to securing this data, nor successfully tracked the value of meter data for their business.
Key report benefits:
- Improve Operations - Boost Customer Service - Better Manage Outages
