This research service provides a general overview of the status of the power utilities market in Brazil, such as present and future capacity, governmental policies, regulation, end users, and feedstock. The Brazilian electricity generation matrix is mainly comprised of renewable sources, specially hydropower. Hydropower plants were responsible for 67.4% of the total addition in Brazilian installed capacity in 2009, while thermal power plants contributed 23.6%, and wind farms were responsible for the remaining 8.9%

Outlook
- After job losses in all sectors of the economy during 2009, the labour ministry forecasts the creation of two million formal positions in 2010. The Brazilian Central Bank predicts an unemployment rate of x.x% for the year 2010, the lowest in the history. During the first semester, the agricultural, manufacturing and construction sectors presented the highest growth.
- Between January and June of 2010, the level of investment saw a xx.x percent increase, compared to the same period in 2009.
- In 2010’s second quarter the investment reached xx.x percent of the Brazilian GDP. The accelerated growth is likely to continue in the near future.
- The internal interest rate in Brazil, identified by the SELIC (Sistema Especial de Liquidação e Custódia) is xx.xx percent.
- Even though the economy was stable, the government raised the internal interest rate in the 2010 to avoid inflation increscent. However, it might prejudice private investments.
- The Special Settlement and Custody System (SELIC) rate is the Brazilian Central Bank's index for performing open market operation in execution of monetary policy.
- Real was the best-performing global currency in 2009, increasing xx.x percent above dollar. At the moment, the exchange rate is about x.xx Real (R$) per dollar and appreciating further even though the government is trying to revert this trend.

- With the addition of x.x GW capacity in 2009, electric power generation installed capacity in Brazil reached xxx.x GW by the end 2009, considering public generation, IPP (Independent Power Producers) and self-producers power plants.
- Electricity generation in Brazil, including public power plants, IPP and self-producers, was xxx.x TWh in 2009, which is x.xpercent higher than previous year’s total. Self-generation growth in 2009 was xx.x percent, taking into account all sources used for electricity self-production. Net imports in 2009 represented additional xx.x TWh of domestic electricity. Hydropower, the main electricity source increased by x.x percent in 2009 due to favourable hydrological conditions.
- According to Mines and Energy Ministry (MME)’s decennial expansion plan, the installed generation capacity in Brazil is likely to reach xxx.x GW by 2017, being xxx.x GW (xx.x percent) from hydropower generation, xx.x GW (xx.x percent) from thermoelectric and 8.6 GW (x.x percent) from electricity imports through the SIN.
- Public service plants remain the major electricity generators, contributing approximately xx.x percent of total generation, while IPP, self producers and other agents together hold xx.x percent in 2009. In 2009, private companies held xx percent of the electricity generation market and 69 percent of the electricity distribution market in terms of total capacity and demand. Regarding the electricity transmission, private companies represented xx percent of the market in terms of total revenue.
