China Power Sector
Taiyou Research, July 2011, Pages: 85
China is well on its way to having the biggest power sector in the world, ahead of even the United States. With a booming economy and the government supporting the extraordinary growth of its industrial sector, China's need for power is at an all time high.
China's electricity generation and consumption patterns are way ahead of other developing countries in not only Asia, but the rest of the world as well. It is expected that by 2015, China's electricity consumption is going to grow by over six percent and with the exception of the Chinese government imposing carbon emission controls on the industry, analysts predict very few impediments to the growth of China's Power Sector.
While China has been developing its renewable energy sources rapidly over the last couple of years, conventional thermal resources still account for the majority of power generated in the country and it is likely that this will continue to be the situation in the coming years. China is a leader in coal reserves and it is no wonder that coal accounts for almost 80% of the country's total power generated. Apart from coal, China has been dependent on nuclear power for quite a large portion of its power generation mix. However, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant accident in Japan in March 2011 is set to change this situation as China has announced a moderated plan for the growth of its nuclear energy sector.
