Business Monitor International's Hong Kong Tourism Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, tourism associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Hong Kong's tourism industry.

BMI Still Upbeat On Hong Kong Tourism In 2010, a total of 36.03mn tourists visited Hong Kong, an increase of 21.8% year on year (y-o-y), according to data released by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) in January 2011. This stellar performance was just ahead of BMI’s own predictions of arrival numbers in the order of 34.8mn for the year as a whole. Provisional tourism revenues rocketed to HKD212.6bn (US$27.4bn), a rise of 30.5% yo- y.

According to the HKTB, aiding Hong Kong tourism in 2010 was a recovery in global economic growth which boosted demand, as well as a relatively weak Hong Kong dollar and an expansion in the scope of China’s Individual Visit Scheme for Shenzen residents, which boosted arrivals from the mainland.
BMI remains bullish about the outlook for inbound tourism to Hong Kong over our forecast period to 2015, with the territory continuing to offer high standards of hospitality, coupled with many different types of tourist attraction. Arrivals from China will continue to be the main source market for inbound tourists and will grow rapidly in the years ahead.

Looking at trends so far in 2011, tourist arrivals were up by 14.4% over the first four months of the year, at 13,065,921. This strong start to the year has led us to make an upwards revision to our tourist arrivals forecast for the current year, now believing that a total of 38.93mn tourists will visit Hong Kong in 2011, an increase of 8% y-o-y. Beyond the current year, our forecasting model calls for a 5-6% average annual increase over the coming years, leading to a total of 47.87mn tourists by 2015.

Spotlight On Cruise Arrivals For 2011, BMI has been able to source data from the HKTB on the number of cruise ship passengers travelling through Hong Kong harbour over 2010. The data show that the number of international passengers passing through Hong Kong increased by 9% over the year to 660,291.

However, there was a sharp decline in the number of Hong Kong residents travelling by cruise ship, with estimated figures for the SAR from the HKTB showing a 34.3% annual decline. Consequently, when the two figures for both international and domestic cruise ship passengers are combined, this actually shows a 19.8% decline in overall cruise ship passenger numbers, to 1,456,654.

Moving forward, we expect cruise ship arrivals to increase in importance over the coming years once Hong Kong completes its new Kai Tak cruise terminal, which is scheduled to open in 2013. For further information on the Hong Kong cruise industry, please see the Cruises section of this report.
High-End Hotels Boost Tourism Offering During 2010, a number of high-end hotels opened in Hong Kong. In January, Swire Hotels opened its 345-room EAST business hotel on Island East. In May, there was the soft opening for the L’Hotel Island South property, closely followed by the Cosmo Hotel Mongkok. Both properties are now fully open. L’Hotel Island South is a 432-room establishment (including 13 suites) on Wong Chuk Hang Road. The hotel has three restaurants/bars, conference and leisure facilities. The Cosmo Hotel Mogkok is a 285- room boutique hotel (including 20 suites) in the Tai Kok Tsui district. The property has extensive conference, dining and leisure facilities.

In May 2011, the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong opened. This 312-room hotel is located on the 102nd to 118th floor of the International Commerce Centre, making it the world’s highest hotel according to local media reports. The property has six dining venues, extensive meeting and conference facilities (including a 705m2 ballroom) and an 860m2 ESPA facility. The 55-room Mercer boutique hotel also opened over Q111, offering guests free Wi-Fi and a complimentary airport shuttle service, alongside a 24-hr gym.

BMI believes the opening of these premium brand hotels will do much to boost average room rates across Hong Kong during 2011 and underlines the buoyant state of high-end tourism in the SAR at this time.

Further openings scheduled for later in the current year include the 260-room Best Western Hotel Causeway Bay, the 380-room Cosmopolitan Kowloon and the 258-room L’Hotel Kowloon Bay, Also in April 2011, in what is believed to be a first for the global hospitality industry, Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University opened a five-star training hotel called Hotel Icon. The 28-storey hotel with 265 guest rooms will offer hospitality industry students the chance to experience ‘real-life’ situations in the running of a high-end hotel property and should do much to consolidate Hong Kong’s reputation as a provider of first-class tourism services. Hotel Icon will also serve as a research test bed for new ways of thinking in the industry, with three rooms set to be used as ‘prototype rooms’.

Hong Kong Still Rated Highly Hong Kong continues to be voted one of the world’s leading tourist destinations, with the country ranked as the Best in Asia in the 2011 Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards and being the sole representative of Asian cities among the Top 10 best destinations, as voted for by users of the TripAdvisor website.
