2010 U.S. Appliance Shipment Statistics
UBM Canon, April 2011, Pages: 31
The first half of 2010 was spurred by U.S. government stimulus efforts offering rebates for consumers who purchased or traded in their old appliances for energy-efficient products. The third quarter showed a slump but the industry was able to rebound in the fourth quarter, allowing 2010 to end with positive results over full-year 2009. Several major appliance categories ended 2010 with unit shipments up 5% or better versus 2009.
The group of core major appliances, including washers, dryers, disherwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens, ended 2010 up 4.6%. Full-year unit shipments of refrigerators for 2010 increased the most versus 2009, climbing 11.6%. Compactors dropped the most in 2010 compared to 2009, falling 7.5%. Full-year 2010 non-adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales totaled $102.7 billion, increasing 2.6% from full-year 2009.
Unit shipments for the residential HVAC industry grew for full-year 2010. Gas warm air furnaces for 2010 increased the most versus 2009, climbing 13%. Central air-conditioners and residential electronic storage water heaters were the only two segments in the HVAC category that suffered a decrease in 2010 shipment units.
During the early months of 2011, unit shipments are up for the residential HVAC and consumer electronic segments and down for the core group of major appliances year-over-year.
