The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a set of new emission control regulations that require significant reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), mercury and acid gases from the power plants in the eastern US. The EPA is not only changing standards for air quality improvement but is also tackling the problem of solid wastes and has proposed rules to phase out wet ash handling and storage at the country’s coal-fired power plants.
