Mobile Platforms - The Center of Mobile Networks
Signals Research Group, LLC, July 2011
Three years ago Signals Research did their first piece on Web 2.0 in which various emerging application paradigms in mobile wireless networks were discusses. One of the emerging paradigms discussed was the early development of ecosystems built around mobile operating systems (OS). At the time, Apple had already established a nascent ecosystem around iPhone/iOS. Nokia was in the process of building an ecosystem around its Ovi web services and Symbian OS while Google had just released Android and it was indicated they would build a similar ecosystem around Android. It was also thought Microsoft could conceivably build one around Windows Mobile and its web services. Research in Motion was also a dominant force in the industry with a bright future.
Fast forward three years and it is clearly evident that ecosystems have been built around several mobile OS platforms, although who could have foretold the demise and/or phenomenal success of its participants.
This issue addresses the state of mobile platforms. The report provides thoughts on the current and future prospects of the most recognized platforms, including Mobile Linux, Symbian, iOS, Android, Web OS, Windows Phone and Blackberry. It also looks at the various trends that are driving the industry, including platform fragmentation, the dominance of various apps stores (and their divergent strategies), social media and messaging, cloud services, mobile payments, synergies between personal computers and mobile platforms, the enterprise space, connected devices, and operator control (or lack thereof) over mobile platforms.
