Belgian Banks Still Face Stiff Competition Dec 00

Abstract Competitive pressures, disintermediation, and the inauguration of monetary union have all been factors behind the concentration of European banking since the mid-1990s. This concentration gathered momentum in 1998 and 1999 in those countries in which the sector was most fragmented. Belgian banking has undergone profound change. The seven largest domestic banks by total assets that existed at the end of 1996 (G-n-rale de Banque, Kredietbank, Bank Brussels Lambert, Cr-dit Communal de Belgique, ASLK-CGER, Cera, and Bacob) have all been involved in link-ups with other Belgian banks or with institutions in the Netherlands and France.
