Abstract
It's not only preparations for hosting the football World Cup that are exercising minds across South Africa at present. While the clock is ticking toward the kick-off in 2010--an historic first for the African continent, there are more immediate political and economic concerns weighing on financial markets in South Africa. Elections are due in 2009, and these, combined with the ongoing debate surrounding Jacob Zuma's ANC presidency (including the recent indictment for him to stand trial on charges of fraud and corruption) are already having an effect in 2008.
