“Permian Basin in the US – Oil & Gas Basin Analysis and Forecasts to 2020” the Permian basin and its emerging shale plays. The report also details the production trends, competitive landscape, and merger and acquisition (M&A) activities in the Permian basin.

Permian Basin is one of the Major Producing Basins in the US

The Permian basin is one of the major producing basins in the US. The production in the basin has increased significantly over the past few years from 598 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) in 2005 to approximately 614 MMboe in 2010. Oil production in the Texas part of the Permian basin accounts for 65% of total Texas oil production. Currently, production from southeast New Mexico accounts for 22% of the total Permian basin production.

Production from the Permian basin is expected to increase in future as companies shift from gas to oil focused drilling. Rising crude oil prices, advances in drilling technology, low drilling and production costs, low-risk oil resources and emerging oil plays have sparked renewed interest in the Permian basin. The figure below details the total oil and gas production from the Permian basin during 2001–2010.

Emerging Shale Plays are Shifting Company’s Interest towards Permian Basin

Although the basin is mature, there are emerging shale plays such as the Wolfberry and the Avalon Shale interval of the Bone Spring in the Permian basin. Strong crude oil prices and advances in drilling and completion techniques are shifting companies’ interests towards the Delaware Basin (DB) and Midland Basin plays.

The Wolfberry is a multi-zone tight oil resource play, producing from the Wolfcamp and Spraberry formations within the Midland basin. The majority of production of Wolfberry comes from Wolfcamp. The Bone Spring trend also has liquids window in its shale formations called Avalon. The Avalon play also includes the New Mexico Leonard Shale.

Occidental is the Largest Producer in Permian Basin

The Permian basin is one of the major basins in the US. Chevron, Exxon, ConocoPhillips, Occidental, Apache, Cabot, Sandridge, Pioneer Natural Resources and Anadarko Petroleum are the most active producers in the basin. Occidental was the largest producing company in the Permian basin in 2010, with a total production of around 87 MMboe. Kinder Morgan held the second spot, while Chevron was the third largest producer in the basin.
