Abstract
In fiscal 2005, U.S. private colleges and universities uniformly exhibited high debt volumes associated with the repair of aging plants, technology upgrades, and changing consumer preferences for housing and athletics facilities, as well as a steady stream of refunding transactions. Investment performance was favorable for the second consecutive fiscal year, improving endowment levels for many institutions. Gift-giving also rebounded close to fiscal 2000 levels as many colleges and universities announced new capital campaigns with unprecedented goals. These favorable trends helped to offset wage inflation, rising health care and utility costs, increased costs of risk and property insurance, greater security costs, and unfunded post-retirement benefits, especially in the area of retiree health care.
