Abstract The Chilean banking system is the strongest in Latin America. This assessment is based on the banks' rigorous supervision, good capitalization, increasing sophistication, and history of systemic support. Chile's relatively developed domestic capital markets and growing sources of domestic funding, including traditionally stable deposits, also bolster the system. Yet, despite these positive factors, the system is under certain pressure from deteriorating, but acceptable, asset quality, a result of a slow economy in past years and the more recent worsening of the exposure to the country's neighbors that are under stress. The lingering effects of the 'deuda subordinada' (remnant claims on banks' profits from the 1980s banking crisis) have diminished significantly in the past years, reducing the pressure to upstream banks'...
