Until recently, the main problem facing Argentine banks was a lack of growth and low profitability, typical features of the recessive economic environment in which they have been operating for more than two years. The economic slowdown has hurt profitability by increasing nonperforming loans and by reducing origination volume. As a result of the weak operating environment, banks have tightened their underwriting standards and seen loan demand curtailed.
