Abstract
Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' sees some risk for U.S. retail sector credit quality for the balance of 2011, reflecting problems from a bumpy economic recovery, still high unemployment, and inflationary cost pressures on food, fuel, and clothing. We believe that sales growth will be more difficult to achieve, especially given difficult comparisons with a year ago. In addition, margins could be squeezed, as retailers may not be able to fully pass along cost increases to a consumer whose spending appetite is being held down by limited discretionary income.
