Bulgaria Telecom Intelligence Report - Bulgaria: Convergence, Consolidation and Competition Boost Operators
Pyramid Research, Inc, Aug 2011
We expect the Bulgarian telecom market in 2011 to generate Lv3.3bn ($2.3bn) in service revenue, an increase of 1.5% in local currency compared with 2010. The market will grow between 2011 and 2016 at a CAGR of 3.1%, reaching Lv4.1bn ($2.7bn) in 2016.
The main drivers of telecom revenue in Bulgaria will be mobile data (CAGR 16.8%), fixed broadband (CAGR 9.5%) and VoIP (CAGR 26.4%). The continued investment in mobile networks, together with the growing demand for mobile data, will more than double the revenue generated by this segment by 2016. Vivacom’s (BTC) investment in its UMTS network in 2010 increased its population coverage from 54.32% in 2009 to 93.43% by the end of 2010, allowing the operator to become the leading provider of 3G technology. The increase in competition in this segment has been pushed by further investments, such as Mobiltel’s announcement in July 2011 of its intention to provide nationwide coverage of its HSPA+ technology.
Competition in Bulgaria no longer just depends on investment and network coverage, but has turned to the need to offer converged services in order to retain customers, according to a new report.
Bulgaria: Convergence, Consolidation and Competition Boost Operatorsoffers a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid's research in the market. It provides detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.
The increasing competition in the converged services segment has pushed the market toward a consolidation phase. 'In addition to Mobiltel's acquisition of two broadband operators, a number of broadband and cable TV operators have united under the holding company Bulgarian Telecom and Television (BTT), in order to be able to compete with major operators,' indicates Olena Kaplan, Associate Analyst at Pyramid Research. Despite increasingly fierce competition, this segment has at the same time great potential as Bulgaria's broadband market is undersaturated. 'We expect broadband penetration in Bulgaria to reach 17% by the end of 2011, which is below comparable CEE markets such as the Czech Republic (21%) and Hungary (25%),' Kaplan adds.
