The core group of major appliances (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ranges and ovens) were up 5.6% in March 2011 compared to March 2010. Disposers increased the most, climbing 13.7%, while compactor shipments decreased the most, down 18.6%. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales in March 2011 were $8.76 billion, up from $8.58 billion in February 2011. Adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales for the first quarter of 2011 were $24.24 billion, up 0.1% over the first quarter of 2010.

Unit shipments for electronic cooking appliances, including ranges, ovens and cooktops, increased 10.9% compared with March 2010. Whirpool Corp., the world's largest maker of major appliances, reported first-quarter 2011 sales of $4.4 billion, up 3% from the first quarter of 2010. Whirpool saw the most growth within its Latin America and Asia divisions. Whirpool Latin America net sales were $1.2 billion for 1Q 2011, increasing 8% year-over-year. Whirpool Asia reported 1Q 2011 sales of $208 million, up 8% versus 1Q 2010.

The company anticipates full-year 2011 industry unit shipments in Asia will grow 6-8%. Economic activity in the manufacturing sector overall expanded for the 20th consecutive month and the overall economy grew for the 22nd consecutive month in March 2011. Appliance was one of eight sectors to report growth in imports and one of the few to report a decrease in export orders for March.
