Abstract Banks in the Republic of Italy (AA-/Stable/A-1+) maintain a strong franchise in their domestic markets, and solid customer loyalty. They benefit from satisfactory operating performances, but remain hampered by a structurally higher credit risk profile than that of their European peers. Significant differences between the creditworthiness of the stronger and the weaker players further characterize the country's banking system. Although banks have come under scrutiny following recent cases of mis-selling, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services does not expect any material change in their business franchises in the long term.
