Abstract During the past two years the Baltimore/ Washington, D.C. metro healthcare market has essentially melded to become one market in response to increasing reimbursement pressures from governmental and private sector insurers and managed care organizations. This process has not occurred smoothly and several providers currently are struggling to integrate operations and clinical functions after having recently merged or affiliated with hospitals that may have been former competitors. In the near term, mild credit pain has been felt from consolidation as some of the newly formed organizations have experienced financial difficulties with the consolidation and integration process.
