Abstract
On Dec. 7 global equity markets rose on the news that President Barack Obama reached an agreement with the U.S. Congress to extend tax cuts. This step, intended to support the fragile economic recovery, cheered and arguably helped reassure risk-shy investors across the Atlantic as well, as the S&P Europe 350 Index gained 1% on the day (see chart 1). The economically sensitive European energy sector gained more ground (1.4%) than the broader market. It was aided by the rise of British Petroleum (BP), whose shares climbed 2% to £4.59.
