Abstract
The European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) is one of the EU's two remaining supranational entities, the other being the European Community (EC; foreign currency AAA/Stable/A-1+). The treaty establishing a third, the European Coal & Steel Community (ECSC; foreign currency AAA/Stable/--), expired on July 23, 2002. The ratings on EURATOM reflect: strong membership support; prudent statutory and budget controls; and its ultimate access (via the EC's budget) to member states' resources, if necessary, to meet its obligations. EURATOM was established as a supranational entity in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome, which also led to the inception of the EC.
