Abstract Approaching the end of a poor to lackluster year for sales, with a tepid forecast for the December holidays that usually ring in substantial gains, many retailers may find it hard to celebrate the season. 'This has been a terrible year so far for retail, and there is no reason to think that things will all of a sudden turn around,' said Gerald Hirschberg, director in the retail sector of Standard & Poor's Corporate Ratings. The grinches responsible for stealing merchants' holiday cheer are a cooling economy, higher interest rates, high fuel prices, and a volatile stock market. Combined with many consumers who are carrying high debt loads, these factors have dented consumer confidence and created tentative and cost-conscious customers....
