By 2012 the NBN rollout is well and truly underway.
Tasmania received the first FttH connections. NBN Co used 2011 to test various design and technology issues in the first five mainland sites. They also invited the first RSPs to become involved in these tests. The official rollout was launched in late 2011 with the announcement of the next 28 sites. This will see the NBN being rolled out to over 500,000 premises during 2012. The next rollout announcement is expected in early 2012.
Rollout selections are based on a range of elements such as the locations of the POIs and technical and geographical issues, and the NBN-readiness of local communities is also playing a key role in this strategy.
By the end of 2011 the government successfully completed its Regional Backbone Blackspots Program, which saw the construction of 6,000 kilometres of high-speed infrastructure, covering just under 400,000 people in regional Australia.
