Interface technologies are going through significant shifts in both PCs and consumer electronics (CE). On the PC side, the big stories are SuperSpeed USB and DisplayPort. The transition from high-speed to SuperSpeed USB has been eased by recent announcements from Intel and AMD about integration of SuperSpeed into their core logic solutions. In display interfaces, DisplayPort will benefit from late 2010 announcements from technology companies that are ending support for both VGA and LVDS over the next few years. On the wireless side, both Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi Direct chip vendors are vying to become high-bandwidth solutions in PC, CE, and mobile devices.

On the consumer side, one major topic is the emergence of HD-capable cameras in smartphones, and attempts by various chip vendors to use their technology to download HD video from these phones. Within wired CE, wireless HD video technologies such as WHDI, WirelessHD, and WiGig offer the capability of transmitting 1080p signals wirelessly around the home with little or no compression.

This PowerPoint presentation includes analysis of recent trends in wired and wireless interface technologies, and annual forecasts through 2014 for shipments of devices with the following interfaces: SuperSpeed, high-speed and low/full-speed USB, DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi Direct, WHDI, WirelessHD, and WiGig.
