In June of 2011, IBM introduced advanced analytics into its new Intelligent Building Management product, which has evolved out of a reference architecture first announced in 2009. The announcements also included capabilities from IBM’s acquisition of Tririga, Inc for space management and real estate planning. IBM has uniquely pioneered industry-specific solutions that extend its native strengths in data center management, event and service management, and asset management and service desk automation. The June 2011 announcement brings advances in business process analytics from IBM's ILOG acquisition, along with enhanced visualization, reporting, and analysis in order to optimize buildings for energy, space and facilities use, among other benefits. Moreover, it packages these capabilities as a single product available as a virtual appliance.

This impact assessment places IBM's June announcement in market context, as well as briefly addresses its broader implications as the role of IT and IT technologies evolve to deliver more transformative values across industries, organizations, and potentially even whole societies.
