Expanding the Realm of Data-Driven Security: IBM Acquires i2

IBM announced its intent to acquire i2, a provider of intelligence and investigation management software for law enforcement, defense, national security and private sector organizations. Terms were not disclosed. With alignment under the company's Smarter Cities initiative, the acquisition gives IBM a greatly expanded presence in these arenas, signaling another significant milestone of interest shown by major vendors in intelligent security and defense, and expanding concepts Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) has been following under the banner of 'data-driven security.' While IBM will undoubtedly multiply i2's success in its existing markets, its innovations could fuel greater expansion of IBM's data-driven capabilities in a wide range of security and defense initiatives and help expand its competitive presence against other industry leaders, if the company continues to shows high interest in the intersections of security, defense, risk, and 'Big Data.'
