Ethylene industry in China is anticipated to grow exponentially in the coming times. With Asia becoming the major contributor to the robust demand growth worldwide, the region is expected to account for 60% of the global demand surge of ethylene in the coming five years. More than half of this Asian demand growth is going to be coming from China. In 2010, China's ethylene consumption reached 24 million tons, while ethylene output was around 11 million tons.
To boost the growth of its ethylene industry, China has built a number of new ethylene facilities in the recent years. Due to this, the increased ethylene capacity has reached almost 2 million tons. Thermal cracking is the major process used in the production of ethylene in China, accounting for almost 82% of the installed ethylene capacity. IN the face of such a huge market demand, international petrochemical giants are also seizing the opportunity of China's markets opening up, especially the favorable opportunities after China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Companies are entering China's ethylene market by launching joint ventures or cooperative enterprises with large Chinese petrochemical firms.
The ethylene industry in China features high regional concentration, with major manufacturing bases concentrated in provinces and municipalities such as Guangdong and Shanghai. Major producers include CNOOC, Shell Petrochemicals Company Limited, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Ltd., Panjin Ethylene Industry Corporation, Shanghai SECCO and PetroChina Dushanzi. New ethylene facilities are generally close to oil fields or in the regions where the petrochemical industry is relatively mature.
The 800,000-ton-per-year ethylene project in Wuhan is being seen as a major contributor to the development of China’s petrochemical industry and an important undertaking that will also contribute to the rise of the central region and promote the balanced development of the region’s economy. The construction of this project will help improve the layout of China’s ethylene industry, raise the level of using oil resources, lead to the development and upgrading of related industries, and promote the adjustment and optimization of the central region’s economic structure.
