CenturyLink/Qwest Merger: Implications for SMB Cloud IT

On April 1 2011, telecom services provider CenturyLink completed its acquisition of Qwest Communications International. When combined with CenturyLink’s planned acquisition of Savvis, the merger should provide business customers with provider choice for Cloud IT and related WAN services. However, existing gaps in both carriers’ product lines pose near-term challenges for prospective customers, particularly in the SMB segment. This Strategic Perspective examines key cloud-related services gaps that impact both the legacy carrier and cloud portions of the business, and provides strategies that if appropriately executed will help CenturyLink become a more robust direct and indirect Cloud IT provider.
