U.S. Appliance Industry: Market Value, Life Expectancy, & Replacement Picture for 2006-2013
UBM Canon, June 2011, Pages: 16
The U.S. Census Bureau reported that adjusted Electronics & Appliance Store sales in March 2011 were $8.76 billion, up from $8.58 billion in February 2011. Unit shipments for electronic cooking appliances, including ranges, ovens and cooktops, increased 10.9% compared with March 2010. Companies such as GE Appliances & Lighting are incorporating new materials into production that will help bolster sales in 2011.
In April 2011, GE Appliances & Lighting's Decatur, Ala., plant began using cyclophentane as its foam-blowing agent in some of the company's top-freezer refrigerators models. This change makes GE the first full-line appliance OEM to use cyclopentane as an insulation foam-blowing agent in residential refrigerators. Cyclopentane has significant environmental benefits including zero ozone depletion potential and very low global warming potential. Whirlpool reported first-quarter 2011 net earnings of $169 million, compared to $164 million in the first quarter of 2010.
Whirlpool expects full-year 2011 U.S. industry unit shipments to increase between 2-3% versus 2010 based on cost reduction and productivity initiatives, increased monetization of certain tax credits, and higher unit volume. Samsung Electronics attributed its 13% revenue increase in first-quarter 2011 to growth in emerging markets and rapid sales of premium refrigerators, washing machines and air-conditioners in Europe. Samsung plans on continuing to focus on the launch of new premium and eco-friendly products as well as enhancing global production efficiency.
