Emerging markets present huge opportunities for the appliance industry. India and China as well as Asian and Middle Eastern markets are expanding and OEMs strive to manufacture niche products in those countries. India's middle class continues to develop, and manufacturers are finding opportunity in retail as well as designing products with elements specific to this demographic. Efforts to cut costs and address market demands, along with economic recovery and sector growth, have led to improved financial performance for manufacturers over same-time-last-year. The latter half of 2010 produced an increase in raw material prices, which may significantly impact the appliance industry's profitability for full-year 2011.

After three years of declining stainless steel production, global stainless steel melting activities in full-year 2010 increased 24.9% to a record high of 30.7 million metric tons. The Asian market accounted for 65% of stainless steel production with Japan experiencing the largest increase in stainless steel melting growth, up 31.5%. More manufacturers are replacing copper with aluminum parts as the price of copper continues to increase. In 2010 copper was up 46%, and the cost of a metric ton was $9,640 for the first quarter of 2011.

This price increase along with the concern of a copper shortage and a forecast for unflagging copper demand from China have made changeover to aluminum easier to rationalize and cost-justify. Prices for Zinc, used as a coating on some steels and used in appliances in castings, increased 30% in 2010. First-quarter 2011 prices went up 11% versus full-year 2010.

This report proves expert analysis of challenges, trends, and opportunities for appliance suppliers. Access a global directory containing contact and material data on 4,133 industry suppliers outlining the services and products they offer.
