Abstract In recent months avian flu has never been far from the headlines in Europe, with 14 of the 25 EU countries reporting cases of the H5N1 virus in wild birds at the time of writing. Germany and France have both seen outbreaks in poultry. There have also been a small number of humans infected by birds, with some deaths, in Turkey and Azerbaijan, and 37 human deaths worldwide this year, mostly in the Far East. The virus currently does not pass easily to humans from birds, and it is uncertain if or when it might mutate to spread easily among humans.
