Abstract The ratings on the State of Bavaria reflect its excellent budgetary performance and its strong economic profile. Bavaria's per capita GDP stands at 116% of the German average, making it one of the wealthiest regions in Germany and worldwide. Bavaria's economic structure has a solid service base, a strong and diversified industrial base, and an excellent level of infrastructure. In 2000, Bavaria continued to post above-average economic growth rates. Bavarian GDP grew by an outstanding 4.3%, which was the highest growth rate of all German states. Unemployment rates have traditionally been among the lowest in Germany and fell to 5.5% in 2000, which compared favorably with the western German average of 7.8%.
