Abstract (Editor's note: Subsequent to the publication of this commentary article, on Feb. 1, 2005, Standard & Poor's Ratings Services revised its outlook on the Republic of Lithuania to positive from stable.) The creditworthiness of the Lithuanian banking system is constrained by: Rapid credit growth; Low prosperity; Slow recovery from systemic setbacks in the 1990s; and An economy sensitive to external shocks, although resilience is hardening. Offsetting these weaknesses are: Improving commercial and financial profiles; Benefits associated with EU accession requirements; A sound macroeconomic climate; Better supervision and regulation; and Completed privatization. The banking system in the Republic of Lithuania (local and foreign currency ratings A-/Stable/A-2) is characterized by greater stability and improving creditworthiness.
