Abstract When we talk about the impact of the global financial situation on the Asia-Pacific region, there are the inevitable comparisons between the events of 1997-1998 and those of today. There are significant differences, of course, primarily stemming from the fact that the origins of the 1997-1998 crisis lay largely within the region, while today's events have their origins outside. It is also fair to say, however, that over the last decade the degree of integration between Asia-Pacific financial systems and those of the U.S. and Europe has increased dramatically.
