Asia-Pacific Sovereign Credit Quality Resilient Into 2006 Feb 06

Abstract Asia-Pacific economies are generally likely to fare well in 2006, with GDP growth remaining strong. There are uncertainties of course: sustained high oil prices, inflation, and the strength of U.S. demand all present significant risks that would take the shine off the region. In addition, transmission of bird flu from human to human would harm prospects in the region. However, the better financial positions of most sovereigns, especially external positions, provide considerable resilience to most shocks and help underpin credit quality. Moreover, global accommodative macroeconomic conditions -- including growth, liquidity, and interest rates -- still support the region's economies.
