Asia-Pacific Governments Set To Borrow US$2 Trillion In 2005, Report Says Feb 05

Abstract MELBOURNE (Standard & Poor's) Feb. 14, 2005--Asia-Pacific governments are forecast to issue medium- and long-term sovereign debt issues exceeding the equivalent of US$2 trillion in 2005, bringing total sovereign outstanding debt from the region to more than US$10 trillion, said Standard & Poor's Ratings Services in a report released today, entitled: Sovereign Issuance Outlook: Asia-Pacific Governments To Borrow US$2 Trillion In 2005. 'Issuance remains robust as governments take advantage of a still relatively benign interest rate environment, improved credit fundamentals, and tight spreads over U.S. Treasuries,' said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Brendan Flynn, director, Pacific Sovereign and International Public Finance Ratings Group.
