A theoretical model for an encyclopaedic dictionary for the Gabonese languages with reference to Yilumbu Gabon desperately needs a typological spectrum of dictionaries for its 62 spoken. A comprehensive, multifunctional, monolingual, encyclopaedic dictionary with a bilingual dimension for each language will enhance the quality of cognitive and communicative functions in the emerging lexicographic endeavours of this multicultural environment. This dissertation presents an innovative metalexicographic model for the planning and compilation of such a dictionary for Yilumbu. A focus on the needs and reference skills of the target users, a well-designed data distribution structure, rapid access to data and ways to ensure a successful retrieval of information are motivated on he basis of prevailing lexicographic theory.
