This book highlights the struggles of a group of young African-American males in their pursuit of a higher education. In their own words, these young men describe the obstacles which they encounter and the challenges they must face in order to prepare themselves for entry into college. Research has shown that having access to college information and resources is important for students to gain access to higher education; yet African-American males continue to have disproportionately high drop-out rates from high school as compared to other ethnic groups. The TRIO Upward program has assisted thousands of low-income and first-generation students prepare for and successfully complete a higher education.
