Discourse is the creation and organization of the segments of a language above as well as below the sentence. It is segments of language which may be bigger or smaller than a single sentence but the adduced meaning is always beyond the sentence. In this book we have primarily taken a linguistic approach to the analysis of discourse. We have endeavoured to find out how humans use language to communicate and in particular, how addressers construct linguistic messages for addressees and how addressees work on linguistic messages in order to interpret them.
