This research explores how gender is constructed, performed, and understood before, during and after the job interview experience. How can gender be made visible in a situation perceived as genderless? How does the job interview look from the candidates' point of view and from the recruiters' point of view? All of these questions are placed in the context of the contemporary Romanian labor market and the answers come from interviews with young job candidates (under 30 years of age) and recruiters from multinational corporations with offices in Bucharest. This research can be interpreted as a good starting point for studying the manner in which gender is understood in work environments in a post-socialist context. This qualitative study aims at filling a research gap regarding studies on gender and work in post-socialist Romania.
