AMELIORATING EFFECT OF BENINCASA HISPIDA (THUNB) EXTRACTS IN COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION IN ALZHEIMERS MODEL IN MICE. Edition No. 1
VDM Publishing House, Sep 2010, Pages: 164
Herbal preparations against human ailments are gaining importance due to the partial rejection of synthetic drugs because of their side effects. Complementary and alternative medicines may be appealing to patients due to their seemingly low side effects profile and optimistic anecdotal evidence especially when more treatments that are conventional have high failure rates or numerous side effects. Currently 80 % of the world population depends on plant-derived medicine for the first line of primary health care for human alleviation because it has no side effects. One of the folklore claim of the plant Benincasa hispida(Thunb),seems possible that treatment with oriental medicinal plants, might delay the progression of neurodegeneration through the inhibition of microglial activation. In order to contribute the medicinal potential of the plant which is not yet proven has to be investigated scientifically by new experimental models. The aim of the present investigation is to evaluate the traditional claim by using the suitable animal experimental methods and to develop a drug which will be clinically effective for the management of AD type of dementia.
