This book seeks to identify the ways in which employment is in contradiction with western societies liberal democratic values. It seeks to identify and outline contradictions in the justifications that are normally proferred for a moral foundation of employment.
Such justifications are normally based upon rights emanating from private property, the separation of private authority from public authority and the status of contract as an exemplar of freedom and equality.
In this book the author seeks to show that:
-there is sufficient critique of these justifications in the literature to cast doubt upon their probity.
-that employment actually mitigates against freedom, equality and promotes forms of dependency.
