This dissertation not only explains how to build a custom linux network
queuing discipline, but also documents the production and testing of a Mice and
Elephants queuing discipline and traffic policer that was needed for
for further evaluation of the Mice and Elephants strategy. It introduces
the Mice and
Elephants queueing strategy that can dramatically improve the
responsiveness of a network with little or no penalty to the overall
throughput. It further describes how the testing of these queuing
disciplines was carried out. It explains the basics of Linux queuing disciplines and ingress
filters, as well as the features of the existing queueing disciplines
and how to use those features to improve a network. Linux queuing
disciplines exist in the Linux kernel itself, and interactive
development of the queuing discipline code within the kernel can be
treacherous. This dissertation documents the uses of a queuing
discipline development and test environment. It also documents the
method used to load test the queuing discipline, once it is fully
operational in the kernel.
