The main objective of this book is to investigate the structural behaviour of open-top steel tanks with floating roof of the form widely used for storage of oil in the range from 20 to 100 meters in diameter under seismic loading. This means that the stresses in the structure resulting from given seismic loading should be considered like in a load-path from the acting pressures on the tank wall to the external support conditions at the tank base or foundation, respectively. Following this load-path all different structural parts of the tank, as there are cylindrical wall, annular plate and tank bottom should be investigated.
Through this study the design criteria of the given codes and specific regulations for storage tanks should be checked for their validity and efficiency too. This, therefore, leads to a comparative study on existing design rules and conclusions for amended design criteria proposed for the design of large tanks.
This book provides insights for the better understanding of the load-carrying behaviour of liquid-filled storage tanks and gives a sound overview of the present codes and recommendations for the design of tanks under earthquake loading.
