The epidemic of childhood obesity in the United
States and around the world has had a negative
impact on the health of the worlds’ children and
promises to have long-term health consequences.
Intervening on the epidemic before long-term health
damage is done promises to be an effective strategy
for curbing the long-term impact. Intervention with
children on this important health topic is an
important but complex issue and empirical evidence
from individual studies is conflicted. A meta-
analysis from 1990 provided insights into the
efficacy of interventions prior to that year. The
current meta-analysis provides a 15 year update to
the original meta-analysis. Changes in the
interventions tested are noted as are similarities
and differences between the effect sizes and
outcomes of each meta-analysis.
