Creating Foundations: Exploring the College Advising Experience. Edition No. 1
VDM Publishing House, September 2008, Pages: 236
College enrollment has increased steadily over the
past decade, and there is an expectation that
enrollments over the next few decades will more than
double our current college student population. For
years, academic advising for college students was on
the periphery. Increasingly, however, faced with the
challenges created by the daunting costs and
competition associated with college success, academic
advisors are finding themselves more and more present
to the everyday experience of college students. The
new approaches to learning, including distance
learning and a growing returning student population,
have contributed to the creation of the role of the
“professional” academic advisor, as more colleges
recognize the value of the experience of advising.
Adopting a phenomenological approach, this book is
addressed toward all who work in a student or
academic affairs role with college students, be they
affiliated with a specific department or an advising
college. Student Affairs professionals are also
likely to gain insight from this book.
