In her work, 'A Product Unraveled: American
Newspapers and the Framing of Tobacco as a Crop, A
Habit and a Policy,' Catherine Siebel examines the
complex ways in which the American press frames three
very different aspects of tobacco: cigarette
addiction, agricultural product, and highly contested
policy. This book draws comparisons across topic,
newspaper type and region of the country,
demonstrating that the 'problems' associated with
tobacco are not only constructed, but in fact reflect
local structures. Through an analysis of a year's
worth of newspaper coverage, the author demonstrates
that despite the increasingly global and homogenized
nature of the news media, the cultural frames used to
understand tobacco remain grounded in geographic and
political history.
